One of the most common types of garage doors many homeowners choose is the tilt garage door. It is a solid one-piece door that opens by tilting outwards and sliding inward. Its popularity is often because it requires little space to operate unlike other types, plus it has a reputation of lasting longer, requiring less maintenance, and having little to no problem operating for many years. However, as with any door, it will eventually encounter problems along the way thanks to it being exposed to outside elements or simply the wear and tear of time.

As with other types of garage doors, issues can be easily remedied if you are fast enough to act. Tilt garage door repairs can be done without problems by you or a team of professionals if you have the money to do so, but to save costs, let’s look at the common problems tilt garage doors encounter and what we can do to resolve these issues.

Common Issues and Possible Remedies to Consider:

A “Popping” Sound: if you encounter a popping sound while using your garage door, then this is an indication the rollers are worn out. Rollers are seen on the side of the door and are the ones usually lifting the entire panel; as such, they are the ones holding the most intense pressure, hence why they can easily break down. If this is the issue, then it should be replaced right away, since ignoring this would result in the door refusing to open or dangerously collapsing and slamming shut unexpectedly.

Uneven Closing: If you see your door unevenly close to one side, you must first check if there are any damages or dents to the side of your panel. If no such damages are seen, then the issue here might be that one of your chains is damaged. A tilt garage door has two chains to raise and lower it evenly when you operate it. A worn-out chain can cause the door to be uneven and would result in it operating crookedly. It should be replaced right away as well, since the hazard of it slamming shut is a huge possibility.

Stays Tilted and Doesn’t Open All the Way: probably one of the most common issues with these types of doors is that it doesn’t open all the way. If you checked your door to see if there are any obstructions causing this malfunction and found none, then this means that the arm of the door is worn out or rusted. The arm of a tilt garage door pushes the door in an outward fashion to keep it flat so it can be pushed inward to open the garage. If the arm in any way is damaged or rusted, then the door won’t be flat and would refuse to be slid inward. A common repair method is spraying the arms with lubricant, but if this fails, then it needs to be replaced.
